The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) has called on the government to hold a referendum on the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the party’s Political Committee, according to a statement issued by ITAK.
The party said the proposed constitutional amendment concerns the sovereignty of the people and therefore should be placed before the public through a referendum.
The proposed 22nd Amendment seeks to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court judges from 65 to 67 years and Court of Appeal judges from 63 to 65 years.
It also proposes increasing the retirement age of judges serving in the High Courts, District Courts and Magistrates’ Courts to 62 years.
ITAK has urged the government to allow the public to decide on the proposed changes through a referendum. (Newswire)
