More than 300 police officers serving in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province have received specialised cybersecurity training as part of an islandwide initiative to strengthen the Police response to cybercrime and emerging digital threats.

Sri Lanka CERT said the programmes were conducted in collaboration with Sri Lanka Police and the Police Information Technology Division for officers attached to the Galle, Matara and Tangalle Police Divisions.

The training focused on modern cybercrime trends, social media-related scams, preservation of digital evidence, information security practices and effective responses to cyber incidents.

According to Sri Lanka CERT, particular attention was given to helping law enforcement officers identify cyber-enabled crimes and properly protect and preserve digital evidence during investigations.

Officers were also briefed on secure digital practices when using technology in the course of their official duties.

The programme series is being conducted on the instructions of Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya and under the direction of Deputy Inspector General of Police Nishani Senavirathna, who is in charge of the Police Research and Information Technology Directorate.

Sri Lanka CERT and Sri Lanka Police said similar programmes will continue as part of efforts to strengthen cybersecurity awareness within the law enforcement sector and improve the Police response to the rapidly evolving digital threat landscape. (Newswire)
