A state-of-the-art mammography machine valued at Rs. 153 million has been provided to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital to expand early detection of breast cancer and other breast abnormalities and reduce waiting lists for mammography examinations.

The new machine will increase diagnostic capacity, enabling more women to undergo examinations promptly and strengthening the hospital’s ability to detect breast cancer and other breast-related conditions at an early stage and refer patients for necessary treatment without delay.

The equipment is also expected to improve the accuracy of detecting breast abnormalities and strengthen diagnostic services required for patients’ subsequent treatment.

The Ministry of Health and Mass Media said the machine can conduct examinations and provide the relevant diagnostic reports within a short period.

The machine has been provided under a programme implemented on the instructions and guidance of Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatissa to strengthen physical and technological resources in the health sector and improve the efficiency, quality and speed of diagnostic and treatment services.

Under the programme, five state-of-the-art mammography machines, each valued at Rs. 153 million, are being provided to the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo, Karapitiya National Hospital in Galle, Kandy National Hospital, Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital and Apeksha Hospital. The total value of the five machines is Rs. 765 million.

The Health System Enhancement Project (HSEP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have provided financial assistance for the purchase of the machines, while coordination and guidance are being provided by the National Cancer Control Programme of the Ministry of Health and Mass Media. (Newswire)
