The Lanka Premier League (LPL) will introduce the Impact Player rule from the 2026 season, bringing one of T20 cricket’s most debated innovations to Sri Lanka’s premier franchise tournament.
The rule allows teams to substitute a player during a match, providing greater tactical flexibility and enabling teams to adapt to match situations.
The decision comes at a time when former India captain Sachin Tendulkar has called for the rule to be removed from the Indian Premier League (IPL), arguing that it has altered the balance of the game by giving batters an added advantage.
Speaking recently, Tendulkar said the rule has contributed to increasingly high-scoring matches and reduced the role of all-rounders, while also limiting opportunities for players to develop multiple skills.
Despite the debate surrounding the rule, LPL organisers have opted to introduce it from the upcoming season, joining a growing number of T20 competitions that have embraced tactical substitutions.
The 2026 edition of the LPL is expected to feature several new playing condition changes, with the Impact Player rule among the most significant additions. (Newswire)
