Brendon McCullum has been removed as England’s Test coach, bringing the Bazball era to an end following a difficult period for the national team.

The New Zealander will remain in charge of England’s white-ball teams but will no longer oversee the Test side after a series of disappointing results and off-field controversies.

His departure comes two weeks after Ben Stokes stepped down as Test captain and retired from international cricket. Stokes and McCullum had led England’s aggressive approach to Test cricket since joining forces in 2022.

England director of cricket Rob Key will remain in his position, with the England and Wales Cricket Board deciding to change the Test leadership after reviewing the situation surrounding the men’s team.

“I’ve absolutely loved coaching the Test side and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together,” McCullum said.

“There’ve been some unbelievable highs and a few tough days along the way, but that’s all part of taking on a challenge like this.

“Of course I’m gutted not to be continuing, but I respect the decision. My focus now is on giving everything I’ve got to the white-ball teams and helping England keep moving forward.”

McCullum was appointed England’s Test coach in 2022 and, alongside Stokes, introduced an attacking style of cricket that became widely known as Bazball.

The ECB is yet to announce his replacement as Test coach. (Newswire)
