Former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran has passed away at the age of 38 after a battle with aplastic anemia, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed on Tuesday.

Zadran had been diagnosed with the rare blood disorder several months ago and was receiving treatment at a hospital in India, where he died.

The left-arm fast-medium bowler was one of the pioneers of Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket and played a key role during the country’s formative years on the global stage.

In a statement, the ACB described Zadran as “one of the foundation-laying figures of Afghanistan cricket,” praising his dedication, passion and commitment to the growth of the sport in the country.

“His contributions and achievements will always remain an important part of the history of Afghanistan cricket, and his efforts in the service of the national team will never be forgotten,” the board said.

Zadran made 44 One-Day International appearances, claiming 43 wickets, and played 36 T20 Internationals, taking 37 wickets. He represented Afghanistan between 2009 and 2020, with his final international appearance coming in 2019.

Beyond his performances on the field, the ACB said Zadran inspired a generation of young Afghan cricketers through his determination and love for the game.

The board extended its condolences to his family, friends, former teammates and the wider cricket community, saying his legacy would live on in the history of Afghanistan cricket. (Newswire)
