PM meets political parties over formation of National Council

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has called on all political parties to expedite the formation of the National Council, the Prime Minister’s Office said. 

The Prime Minister chaired a meeting of political parties to discuss the proposed Parliamentary Committees and the proposed National Council at the Parliament complex yesterday (29). 

He urged the parties to submit their proposals as early as possible so that a final decision could be reached by Friday, the 2nd of September 2022.

The party leaders agreed to submit their views on the draft submitted by Wednesday (31) so that the establishment of the National Council could be expedited. 

The Prime Minister’s Office said most of them agreed that a consensus must be reached between political parties regarding the Committees and the National Council.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), the main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC), Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP), and several others.
