England cricket captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are being investigated by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) over an incident at a nightclub following England’s first Test victory over New Zealand.
The ECB said the pair were involved in a “breach of team protocols” during the early hours of Monday morning after the match at Lord’s concluded on Sunday.
According to the ECB, Stokes and Atkinson were present at a nightclub when the incident occurred. The board said it is gathering further information and has informed the Cricket Regulator.
“We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course,” the ECB said in a statement.
The investigation reportedly involves more than a breach of England’s midnight curfew, which was introduced following controversies surrounding the team’s conduct during recent overseas tours.
Saracens Rugby Club also confirmed it is investigating an incident involving one of its academy players who was allegedly connected to the same event.
The latest controversy comes after England faced criticism over player behaviour during the Ashes tour and other off-field incidents in recent months.
The outcome of the investigation could have implications for England’s squad selection for the second Test against New Zealand, which begins at The Oval on June 17.
Atkinson starred in England’s 115-run victory at Lord’s, claiming seven wickets in the match, while Stokes endured a difficult game with the bat.
No further details of the alleged incident have been made public. (Newswire)
