
A new apartment complex built for low-income families in Colombo was officially opened in Kirulapone yesterday (4).
The “The Residencies Kirulapone” housing project, located on D.M. Colombage Mawatha, comprises two residential towers (B1 and B2), with one tower consisting of 11 floors and a total of 624 housing units. The project was developed at a cost of Rs. 5.784 billion.
Funded by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the project was implemented under the Colombo Urban Regeneration Programme through the Urban Development Authority (UDA) under the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development.
The housing units have been allocated to families relocated from Poorwarama, Samagi Mawatha in Narahenpita, Samagi Watta and Pichchamal Watta along Kirimandala Mawatha, as well as residents displaced by the Kelani Valley railway modernization project.
The apartment complex is equipped with fire protection and gas systems, water and sewerage facilities, passenger elevators, electricity services and a common parking area. It also includes a preschool, daycare centre, community hall, supermarket, healthcare centre, Grama Niladhari office, police post and a fire response unit.
Authorities said the next phase of the project will include the construction of five new access roads, improvements to the Kirulapone canal network, a stormwater retention pond to reduce flooding, a commercial building with 38 shops, walking paths and a fitness centre to further improve the living environment and livelihoods of residents.
