The United States launched a fresh wave of airstrikes on southern Iran on Wednesday, with explosions reported in several areas, including the port city of Bandar Abbas, as tensions between Washington and Tehran continued to escalate.
The strikes came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the interim ceasefire with Iran was “over” and warned of further military action following attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. Central Command said the latest operation targeted more than 80 Iranian military sites, including air defence systems, radar installations and anti-ship missile positions, with the stated aim of reducing Iran’s ability to threaten maritime navigation.
Iranian media reported blasts in southern cities, including Bandar Abbas, while Tehran condemned the strikes and vowed retaliation. Iranian authorities also claimed to have launched missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait.
The renewed hostilities have heightened fears of a wider regional conflict and further disruption to global energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. (Newswire)
