On 9th May 2026, the ballroom of Cinnamon Grand Colombo became more than a ceremonial venue. It became a place where leadership, education, and human dignity converged around a single powerful idea: every child deserves the chance to see clearly, both in vision and in life.

The occasion marked the District Learning Assembly and the Installation Ceremony of 2026 – 2027 Rotary District GovernorKumar Sundararaj surrounded by Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors and many national and international guests. But beyond the formalities of leadership transition, the event carried a deeper national significance: the launch of a movement that may quietly transform thousands of young lives.

A Signature Initiative Born from a National Need

The highlight of the evening was the launch of the district’s signature project for the Rotary year 2026–27“Sharp Eyes Learn Better (SELB)”. This is responds to a critical but often overlooked challenge in Sri Lanka’s education system, uncorrected vision problems among schoolchildren. With over 25,000 students estimated to require spectacles, many remain undiagnosed or unable to afford correction, silently affecting their ability to learn and thrive.

SELB introduces a structured, sustainable approach on early vision screening in schools, training teachers for initial screening, professional diagnosis by qualified eye specialists and provision of spectacles free for children in need. As emphasized by Dr Naresh Pradhan at the District Learning Assembly, “Early vision correction is one of the simplest yet most powerful interventions to transform educational outcomes at scale”

In his address, 2026-27 District Governor Kumar shared the guiding philosophy behind the initiative, capturing the heart of its purpose – “I cannot accept that a child’s potential is limited by something so simple and solvable. No child should ever feel left behind because of the way they see the world. When we correct a child’s vision, we help them see possibility.”

This statement set the emotional and moral foundation for SELB, framing it not just as a health intervention, but as a commitment to equity, dignity, and opportunity for every child.

When Ability Speaks Louder Than Sight

One of the most powerful moments of the evening came from the students of the Ratmalana School for the Blind, whose performance brought the audience to silence, showcasing resilience, creativity, and ability beyond limitation.

The highlight of the evening was a young student of the school for the blind, who delivered the most unforgettable message of the night. She stood before the entire audience of national leaders and educators, not to seek sympathy, but to call for action. Her words carried a clarity that transcended sight– “There are many children who simply need a pair of glasses to see clearly, to read better, to follow their dreams. Something so small can completely change their lives. If a child can be helped with glasses, let’s give them that chance. If a child needs braille, audio learning, or just a little more patience, let’s make sure they are not forgotten.”

The audience listened in complete silence and responded with a standing ovation, reflecting deep respect and encouragement for her message, which transformed the evening from ceremony to reflection.

From Blurred Pages to Clear Futures

Beneficiaries from the pilot phase of SELB also shared moving testimonies. One student described how undiagnosed vision problems once made learning difficult, until receiving spectacles changed his academic journey: “Now I can read. Now I can learn, Now I can dream”. Their stories stood as living proof of SELB’s potential impact.

A Movement Begins,

What distinguished the evening was not only the launch of a program, but the immediate response it inspired.Pledges of support were made reflecting shared understanding. As Rotary International District 3220 (Sri Lanka & Maldives) enters a new Rotary Year, SELB stands as a promise to the nation, grounded in the simple truth, “When a child can see clearly, opportunity begins.
