The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers’ Union (CEBEU) says the work-to-rule trade union action launched in protest against the government’s decision to divide the CEB into four entities will be intensified starting today (16).
Dhanushka Parakramasingha, a member of the executive committee of the union, said that the first phase of the work-to-rule campaign concluded yesterday, and the union has now decided to proceed with the second phase from today.
However, he emphasized that the union does not intend to inconvenience the public through these actions and that the measures are designed to be felt by the government rather than disrupt essential services.
Accordingly, he stated that employees will refrain from participating in tender committees and withdraw from other committee duties beyond their core job responsibilities, as a way to signal the escalation of the union’s protest to the government.
He further noted that all employees are expected to report sick leave in two separate groups on 17 and 18 September, and that a protest campaign will be organized during those two days against the government’s restructuring efforts.
Nonetheless, he assured that these trade union actions will not result in office closures or disruptions to other operational processes. (Newswire)
