
Sri Lanka secured a historic milestone at the WBC Muaythai World Championship 2026, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from June 25 to 29, with Aashiq Nazeer winning the country’s first-ever gold medal at the tournament.
Competing in the senior 57kg category, Aashiq captured the gold medal, a feat WBC Muaythai Sri Lanka described as a landmark achievement in the country’s Muay Thai history.
Sri Lanka was represented by a six-member team at the championship, with four athletes returning home with medals.
The results were:
Gold: Aashiq Nazeer – Senior 57kg
Silver: Methuka – Boys 10-11 years (44kg)
Bronze: Gevin – Senior 71kg
Bronze: Kulunu – Boys 14-15 years (40kg)
Roshan Duminda, Chairman of WBC Muaythai Sri Lanka, said Aashiq’s victory marked Sri Lanka’s first-ever gold medal at the WBC Muaythai World Championship and described it as a significant milestone for the sport in the country.
He added that the overall medal haul reflects the progress of Sri Lankan Muay Thai on the international stage and is expected to inspire the next generation of athletes. (Newswire)
